Vauville: a remarkable garden a short drive from La Becterie

Vauville Castle

The Cotentin is a region full of charm, known for its unspoiled natural landscapes… but also for its beautiful gardens! Several of them have earned the prestigious “Remarkable Garden” label, each with its own unique character – exotic, romantic, wild, or historic. Whether you visit the park at Château des Ravalet in Cherbourg, the Jacques Prévert Gardens in Saint-Germain-des-Vaux, or the stunning Botanical Garden of Vauville, you’ll be amazed by the rich plant life thriving here at the edge of Normandy. From our guesthouse, La Becterie, all of these gardens are easily accessible – less than a 30-minute drive away, making them perfect destinations for day trips during your stay.

Vauville – A Hidden Gem Between Land and Sea

The village of Vauville has a remarkable garden a short drive from La Becterie. It is a lovely getaway spot. Nestled between hills and the sea, it offers a true breath of fresh air. The area is home to the Château de Vauville, as well as the wide, wild beach of the Anse de Vauville, surrounded by dunes and heathland. Nearby, the Mare de Vauville nature reserve is a haven for birds and coastal plants, making it ideal for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone simply looking to unwind by the ocean. With its peaceful atmosphere and stunning views, Vauville is well worth a visit.

The Remarkable Garden of Vauville – A One-of-a-Kind Place

Created in 1948, this botanical garden is a true gem. Covering over 4 hectares, it features more than 1,000 plant species from temperate regions across the globe – Australia, New Zealand, South America, and beyond. Thanks to the Gulf Stream and the dedication of its owners, these exotic plants thrive in Vauville’s unique microclimate. The garden is open daily during the high season, from 2 pm to 6 pm. Entry is €9.50 for adults, and children under 18 accompanied by an adult enter for free. Dogs are welcome (on a leash), and while the terrain is somewhat uneven, the staff do their best to accommodate visitors with reduced mobility.
Vauville’s garden is just one of several “Remarkable Gardens” in the Cotentin. Others include the park at Château des Ravalet, the Jacques Prévert Gardens, the presbytery garden in Brucheville, and the park at the Domaine de Nacqueville. Perfect for anyone who enjoys greenery and peaceful strolls.

As for a Place to Stay… Try La Becterie

It’s true – the Château de Vauville also offers guest rooms. However, they come at a significantly higher price than ours, with smaller spaces and a more remote location. At La Becterie, our rooms are spacious and comfortable, and our house is ideally located for exploring the entire Cotentin Peninsula without spending too much time on the road. Of course, we’re not a castle… but we offer a warm, friendly welcome in a charming house surrounded by nature. Vauville’s remarkable garden itself is a short drive from La Becterie
This being said, whether you’re a plant enthusiast or simply curious, we highly recommend visiting the Botanical Garden of Vauville. It’s a place we truly love – from its majestic trees to its rare and beautiful plants. We especially enjoy the stunning hydrangea path – one of the garden’s many highlights. A poetic, peaceful visit you won’t want to miss during your stay with us.
